LILURA is the moniker of singer-songwriter Jemma Tweedie who hails from the Scottish Highlands. Originally starting out as more of an acoustic act, in the past couple of years Tweedie has found her feet in the world of electro-pop and The Skinny are delighted to be premiering her latest single Killer Karma, which you can listen to in the below SoundCloud player (click here if it’s not displaying correctly).

"Killer Karma was written whilst reflecting back on some seriously toxic relationships,” Tweedie tells us of the song’s inception. “The type that makes you fall for someone so quickly and leads you into a false sense of security. Everyone always says if it seems too good to be true then it probably is. I believe that now. How one person can put on such a good show of telling someone they love them whilst doing the dirty behind their back I will never know – it's a real talent.

“But this song is a farewell to those relationships with a feeling of content knowing that things have moved on and from that we are all stronger and more powerful women. It's an affirmation that what goes around really does come around. In the end we are all going to get what we are due.”

When it comes to what inspires her, Tweedie tells us: “I've been listening to a lot of dark pop recently and look up to artists such as Halsey, Billie Eilish and Charli XCX. However the main inspiration for Killer Karma came from a series of real life dramas at a time where several of my friends had been in serious relationships, a few of them even engaged and en route to become married within the year. Turns out that people aren't always who they pretend to be and all of those friends ended up going from planning the biggest day of their lives with the men they loved to being back at square one with fuckboy problems. I have a genuine fear of weddings now because every time I get invited to one something bad happens and it's called off.

“Killer Karma is a bit of a power pop anthem to anyone who has felt second best in any relationship. The ones who have been cheated on, lied to or made to feel like they are not worthy. I wanted to make them feel happy those relationships are over knowing that karma can do the dirty work for them. Just don't invite me to your wedding.”

Killer Karma is released on 5 Jul; LILURA plays Belladrum Tartan Heart Festival, 2 Aug
