Almost a year to the day since we premiered Super Inuit’s last music video for their track Chicane, which featured grainy, in-car simulation footage of a car repeatedly going through the same chicane on a race track, the Edinburgh duo of Fern Morris and Brian Pokora are back with an altogether more visually stimulating video for their latest single Tectonic.

Shot by the incredibly talented Edinburgh-based filmmaker Mario Cruzado, the music video for Tectonic sees Cruzado take inspiration from the ‘tiny movements’ referenced in the song’s lyrics as he combines visual effects with footage of a masked Morris and Pokora shot in various locations around Edinburgh.

“When developing the concept I took ideas from the lyrics and from chatting with the band about colour and shape – for example the idea for the pastel pink paint came partly from that,” Cruzado tells us. “I wanted to focus on small movements and awkward positions and camera angles. I dislike the idea of the 'right composition' in a shot, if it fits the feeling then it's right. There’s also an influence from a feeling of being out of place – so there’s an overarching sense of that in the video.”

"Most of all we wanted to avoid all the usual music video tropes on the video for Tectonic and thought something more abstract would represent our music best,” Morris and Pokora tell us. “Other than some suggestions of colour palettes and geometric shots, we gave Mario free rein and appreciate everything he came up with.

“The video containing both live action footage and visual effects elements is important for us with our music – continuing from Chicane last year which we described as 'two different perceptions of reality'.”

The stunning video for Tectonic perfectly complements the song's bubbling beats and seemingly effortless vocals from Morris, and The Skinny are delighted to be premiering it via the YouTube player above (click here if it’s not displaying correctly).
