The Phantom Band @ Òran Mór, 21 Nov

Article by Darren Carle | 24 Nov 2010

It was a no-brainer really. With nary a bad song in their repertoire and playing the superb Òran Mór to an eager, almost ecstatic, homecoming crowd, it would have taken some doing for The Phantom Band to have put on anything less than an exemplary show tonight.

Right from opener Throwing Bones, the audience are rewarded for the electric atmosphere they have brought, whilst mid-set highlight A Glamour finally brings proceedings to a boiling point, erupting into what feels like the greatest party at the end of the world. From there, some minor quibbles bring things back down to earth; a missed drumbeat here, a flat vocal there.

Yet each and every time Los Phantoms manage to nail it back in to place, particularly their gleefully indulgent finale of Crocodile. “Thanks for coming tonight," gushes frontman Rick Anthony. “And on a Sunday too. What were we thinking?” Well sir, it beats the shit out of I’m A Celebrity, that’s for sure. [Darren Carle]
