Soap! The Show @ Assembly, Assembly Hall

Soap Without Additives

Feature by Mark Harding | 17 Aug 2010

Soap uses the idea of singing in the bath as the departure point for an entertainment show of spectacular circus and gymnastic routines – set in a household bathroom.

There's a good balance of humour, led by a female comedy figure and a singer, to create the variety needed to put an edge on the circus acts – Soap is so well constructed that even the more tradional, less athletic routines have the audience cheering with enthusiasm. There is some ensemble work, but the core of the show is the solos - highly athletic trapeeze acts and sexy gymnastic routines (drawing appreciative sounds from the ladies sitting at the front).

There's vein of risque material but nothing too obtrusive for those who won't understand it - although parents may need to be prepared to explain why granny keeps shouting at the wet men.

Sure, Soap may be clinical and calculated to please the crowd. But they do have a crowd to please. There won't be revelations (and the cod-opera may be irritating), but there's plenty of spectacle and quite a few laughs. For a family outing to suit all ages you can trust Soap won't be a wash-out.

Soap, 17-30 Aug, 7.15pm, £17
