Sex Idiot @ Zoo Roxy

Byronicly Touching

Feature by Mhairi Graham | 27 Aug 2010

Bryony Kimmings is somebody that you’d love to go for a drink with. The basis of this one-woman show is retracing the steps of those with whom she has done a lot more, as she discovers that she has contracted chlamydia and sets off on a sexual crusade down memory lane in order to trace its origin. A nutty cabaret concoction of songs, stories, poetry and performance, in which Bryony revisits her libidinal past and discusses human nature in regards to sex.

We are treated to an array of songs about heartbreak, lust, drunken stupors and the 69 different synonyms used for the sexual region - beaver, James Blunt, Fuckingham palace and The Long Road to Grimsby to name a few. Each explore what drives and destroys our sexual desires in a poetic and comic manner, along with a crazy game in which the audience are invited to swig some Jack Daniels and contribute a pubic hair to a cup, which Bryony then manifests into a moustache. Outlandishly funny and completely mad.
This all occurs within a strange and enchanting world of paper hearts, plant pots, garlands and feathers, along with a variety of glitzy, customised costumes including sequin-seamed, floral matador trousers, feathered headdresses and hooker heels that together represent the bizarre and exotic world of Bryony Kimmings. A range of musical instruments and a well-considered soundtrack completes the act.

There is a strong bond to nature throughout, as she discusses and compares the mating patterns between birds and humans, and uses the symbolic presence of sticks, plants and wildlife to convey society’s attitude towards sexual activity.

It finishes on a emotive and tender moment in which Bryony expresses that the true key to any relationship is love. Throughout the show she continues to contribute to an on-stage bowl that resembles some kind of ‘memory soup’ or potion created from the remnants of her sexual past, which culminates with Bryony performing a strange and powerful sacrificial ritual in which she drenches herself in its contents.

Sex Idiot is an engaging, provocative and often hilarious 60-minute marathon of sexual exploration, where love, lunacy and debauchery collide; a fast-paced throng of arousal and disturbance, coated in poignancy and topped off with an STD.
