Experimentalista! @ Sweet
Squared Circles
Hidden away in a hotel room on the Grassmarket, one of Scottish cabaret's most talented dancers and an imaginative emerging songwriter have worked up a show to escape the supper club. There is a measure of Amanda Palmer in the piano led numbers, an angular take on life's complexities that is idiosyncratic and witty, while Gilda Lilly's illustrative dance accompaniments have the personality and charm missing in much burlesque.
Yet the duo are at their most exciting when musician Susanna Macdonald builds up a track from loops and sounds and Gilda lets rip with a mixture of jazz and contemporary feints and funks. Macdonald's songs are funny and sardonic: even the pure joy of her proposed Eurovision entry has a sharp wit lurking behind the blather.
As cabaret defines itself by glamour and glitz, Experimentalista! is defiantly lo-fi, concentrating on the song-writing and the choreography and prizing good humour over polish. Gentle, friendly and approachable, this duo square the circle of radical and accessibility.
