MUBI FEST coming to Glasgow in 2025
Distributor, streaming service and production company MUBI have announced that their global touring festival MUBI FEST will come to Glasgow in November 2025
The Scottish film scene is not short of film festivals, but there's a new one to be added to your calendar: MUBI FEST. For those uninitiated, MUBI FEST is a series of film festival weekenders that take place across the world, and for this second edition Glasgow is joining the party.
The MUBI FEST first weekender this year is in Chicago from 26-27 April, and the final one will come to Scotland’s largest city from 28-30 November. Inbetween, MUBI FEST will go to nine other cities including Mexico City (4-6 Jul), Rio de Janeiro (2-3 Aug), Berlin (3-5 Oct) and Rome (14-16 Nov) before coming to a close in Glasgow for the only UK stop on this year’s tour.
“Following the success of the UK’s inaugural MUBI FEST in Manchester in July 2024, this is another opportunity for UK film lovers to celebrate global cinema in all its forms,” says MUBI. The programme for the Glasgow MUBI FEST has not been announced yet, but we’re told to expect “a hand-picked selection of groundbreaking feature films and captivating shorts, alongside filmmaker Q&As, industry workshops, immersive installations and live music from DJs and bands.”
To give you a flavour of the types of films that could be on offer, last year’s MUBI FEST in Manchester included a visit from Levan Akin with his excellent queer drama Crossing, a screening of the inventive coming-of-age doc Gasoline Rainbow with the talented Ross Brothers in attendence and a preview of In Camera with a Q&A with Manchester-born filmmaker Naqqash Khalid. The festival also had live music and DJ sets from Manchester artists like Chandé, Bolibubbles and Tarzsa, and a pop-up cinema where audiences could drop in for free and catch short films by the likes of Sofia Coppola, Yorgos Lanthimos and Hayao Miyazaki.
