The Bongo Club Cabaret

A mash up of fun and Fringe favourites

Article by Erin McElhinney | 25 Aug 2009

I’ve been going to the Bongo Club Cabaret for years. I’m going to say that upfront. Thing is, there’s a very good reason for that: it’s one of the best showcases for the most entertaining, jaw-dropping and downright bizarre acts on the Fringe, and this year is no exception.

Rhymes with Purple (producers for 2009) run a very tight ship, and have produced a consistently above par programme. Part of the beauty of this show is that it contains a genuine variety of acts; some you’ll laugh at, some will make you grimace, some will leave you begging for more – all will challenge and provoke. On the night I attended it featured mad rock from Los Angeles, a feminist striptease (no, really), dislocated limbs and oh-so-tortured cabaret; not to mention a fantastic turn by Frisky and Mannish, currently garnering (well deserved) 5 star reviews left, right and centre. Which brings me back to my original point: the Bongo Club Cabaret is simply one of the best value, high quality chances to see the pick of the Fringe out there. Long may it continue.
