Since its premier in 1877, 'Swan Lake' has grown to be the most popular ballet ever performed. The classic story tells of Odette, a Princess who is captured by the sorcerer Rothbart and turned into a swan. Prince Siegfried falls in love with the Queen Swan Odette and a battle of their love against evil ensues. Derek Deane's production of Swan Lake for English National Ballet perfectly captures the passion and magic of this tale, uniting story and dance in a satisfying and comprehensive manner. Agnes Oaks steals the show with her heartfelt portrayal of the Queen Swan, whilst Thomas Edur sensitively conveys the turmoil and isolation of the Prince. Captivating to watch, Deane's demanding and intricate choreography is performed with technical artistry and flair. Empowered by a lavish set design, costumes and Tchaikovsky's evocative score, played in full by the company's Orchestra, this really is ballet at its best. [Gemma Kempthorne]
