Avoiding Pantomime: Cryptic Nights

Curiouser and Curiouser

Feature by Gareth K Vile | 30 Nov 2010

The variety format has even reached to this decidedly intellectual evening of music, visual and performance art. Coming from the same people who brought the multimedia extravaganza Orlando to The Traverse and Tramway, Cryptic Nights loiter on the margins between different formats for an entertaining glimpse into the cutting edge.

Themed around original instruments made from found objects or junk – The Cabinet of Sonic Curiosities promises to be both musically and visually beguiling. Featured performers include Rose and Sandy on their Cat’s Cradle, Sarah Kenchington playing a “Hurdalion Gurdalion” and “Bell Tower” and Robbie Thompson on Idimov: A Sound Sculpture.

Thompson has a reputation for engaging with music outside of the traditional gig. Not only was he part of the 85a Collective who turned the film Orzel into a live rock musical and disturbing site-specific performance, he teamed up with Govanhill Baths for a Sonic Soak during the summer.

Prolific music video director James Houston and Cry Parrot VJ Florence To chime in with images during the performances, converting the CCA bar into an immersive theatre of light and movement.
