Rampage: Total Destruction (Midway)

Sit back, relax and chew on some skyscrapers, it's evolution baby.

Remakes are symptomatic of the post-modern world; some are dog shit, whereas others feel much more like a necessity to ensure the realisation of an idea's true initial potential. So which valley does the simplistic smash-em-up of 'Rampage: Total Destruction' veer down? For those too young to recall, the original 'Rampage' set our Master Systems ablaze back in '88, which almost automatically makes 'R:TS' a slice of most welcome revamped classic arcade carnage from the get go. Rose tinted goggles on, and before you've got time to say "ee, when I were a lad", there's relief in seeing Midway pull off the next generation of their baby with class and a ridiculous plot involving a mutant-creating soda pop gone haywire. Hence the return of the aptly named George, Lizzie, Ralph and 33 other freaky genetic wonders to aid you in the quest to lay waste to various major cities across the globe. The addictive "smash and grab" qualities are ever present (as if you could get it wrong) but now you've got 3-D scrolling into the deal and this is nowhere near as clunky as you might expect with your dubious internalised nostalgic cravings. Sit back, relax and chew on some skyscrapers, it's evolution baby. [Dave Kerr]
