Pearl Lowe’s son is desperate for her to dress more “normally”.

The singer-turned-designer moved from London to the country with her musician husband Danny Goffey and their children Alfie, Frankie and Betty in 2005. Although she loves the relaxed pace of her new life, she admits she has struggled to adapt to country fashions.

“When I went to collect the children from their state primary in Hampstead, I didn’t look that different from the rest of the mothers at the gates,” she explained. “In Hampshire, heads turned as soon as we rocked up. ‘You could try to dress a bit more normally,’ Alfie said to me early on. ‘You could wear jeans and jumpers instead of those funny flowery dresses.’ ”

Frankie even asked his mother to cover her red bob as he was embarrassed about how bright it was.

Danny, the drummer with Supergrass, was also initially worried about how they were perceived by the other locals. He feared they were viewed as something out of a horror movie, with Pearl soon coming round to his way of thinking.

She explained to Britain’s Sunday Times newspaper: “He joked when we went to a parents meeting at the school, ‘We look a bit like the Addams Family next to this lot.’ He had a point. All the fathers were smart in jackets and ties, the mothers had blonde highlights, tweed and cashmere. Then there was Danny in well-worn T-shirt and jeans, and me in a tea dress, black velvet cape and a red bob. ‘That or the Munsters,’ I replied.”
