The Bees - Listening Man

As a chameleon-like exercise in replicating the sounds of another era it's remarkably successful.

Single title: Listening Man
Artist: The Bees
Label: Virgin
They've always revelled in Sixties nostalgia, but with Listening Man The Bees may have pushed their obsession a little too far. Sounding note-for-note like pretty much every piece of Southern Soul that's still circulating out there after forty years, you can't help asking yourself why they bothered. As a chameleon-like exercise in replicating the sounds of another era it's remarkably successful, but frankly most of us were quite happy with the originals, and would rather listen to Otis Redding than this rather shallow replica. Not actually bad, just incredibly unnecessary. [Dan Coxon]
