Revere - Skin

Inspiring musical visionaries or over-rated, gimmicky, gasbags?

Single Review by Andrew Monroe | 15 Jul 2006
Single title: Skin
Artist: Revere
Label: Albino
Revere play ambitious, symphonic art-pop that's lush, stately, and undeniably pretty. Skin, their second single, features impassioned falsetto vocals, unconventional instrumentation (is that a glockenspiel?) and a dramatic sensibility that would do David Bowie proud, but it's hard to know exactly what to make of it. Your opinion of Revere's work will likely depend on whether you consider other indie maximalists, like Broken Social Scene and the Arcade Fire, to be daring, inspiring musical visionaries or over-rated, gimmicky, gasbags. Is Skin a gorgeous mini-masterpiece or merely more indie-prog bloviating? I think I'll leave this one up to the listener. [Andrew Monroe]
