Dan Sartain - Replacement Man

Sartain sounds as if he's been raised in spit 'n sawdust saloons among stony-paced gunslingers

Single Review by Nick Mitchell | 13 Oct 2006
Single title: Replacement Man
Artist: Dan Sartain
Label: One Little Indian
Is Dan Sartain the reincarnated soul of Johnny Cash? Aside from the small fact that their lives briefly overlapped, that's what his record company wants us to think. The twenty-three year-old native of Birmingham (the cool one in Alabama that is), Sartain sounds as if he's been raised in spit 'n sawdust saloons among stony-paced gunslingers – or maybe he just really dug the 'Pulp Fiction' soundtrack. Either way, 'Replacement Man' is a surprisingly accomplished homage to the man in black, complete with a dark rockabilly riff, a wizened if derivative lyric, and a fair crack at Wild West nostalgia.
