Shuttle – Halo EP

Single Review by Bram E. Gieben | 23 Aug 2012
Single title: Halo EP
Artist: Shuttle
Label: Ninja Tune
Release date: 3 Sep

Also known for being the touring drummer for Passion Pit, Nathan Donmoyer aka Shuttle's Halo EP is a follow-up to 2009's Tunnel EP. The title track combines some excellent pulsing synths and retro-futuristic 90s breakbeat-house drums. However, the vocal is jaw-droppingly awful; Isom Innis's voice is a nasal, auto-tuned X-Factor howl that will have you reaching for the 'next' button, or possibly a shotgun.

The 90s breakbeat and pianos continue on the excellent Whip, while Wake Up is a louche, funk-filled treat. Apple is intricate, infectious fidget-house, while the merciful appearance of a nearly-instrumental Halo almost makes up for the offensively bad vocal cut. [Bram E Gieben]
