Paul White – Watch The Ants EP

Album Review by Bram E. Gieben | 10 Jul 2013
Album title: Watch The Ants EP
Artist: Paul White
Label: One Handed Music
Release date: 29 Jul

Paul White's relentless eclecticism – bouncing manically like a pinball between electro, krautrock, hip-hop, psychedelic synth jams, and even jazz riffs cut into abstract grime – is given some much-needed focus by such prestigious collaborators from the hip-hop world as Danny Brown, Sean Price, Homeboy Sandman and Trim.

The track featuring Trim – a jazzy, oboe-led jam – is a particular highlight, with Trim yelling 'Get your head round this!' while the beat staggers drunkenly from genre to genre roughly every two seconds. The production is so inventive that the rappers end up sounding more like beat poets. Reverb-soaked chorus hooks push many songs gently back towards indie rock territory. Staggeringly diverse, remorselessly experimental, it's a little like an explosion in an ideas factory, but White's fans will be used to that. A quirky and delightfully odd album, this is one for those who hunger for ceaseless novelty and experimentation in music. [Bram E. Gieben]
