Martyn – Hello Darkness EP

Much-touted post-dubstep producer Martyn returns with a 12” on Brainfeeder that shows real promise and development. With beautifully textured, melancholic synths and a crisp, driving 2-step rhythm, the lead track is anthemic in its darkness, evoking early breakbeat hardcore productions by the likes of 2 Bad Mice and Blame in its simplicity and effectiveness.

 

This is warehouse music, night music, minimal, beautiful, dangerous and euphoric. L-Vis 1990 and Bauplan, heads of the achingly-hip Night Slugs imprint, remix 'Bauplan' on the flip, their mix recalling the early Rephlex interpretation of Grime: all claustrophobic electronics and deep, sparse menace. It's an absolute triumph. Redshape's funky house-flavoured remix of We Are You In The Future is less thrilling, but certainly not unlovely.
