Second DIY EP from post-rock/hardcore Newcastle four-piece

Single title: Rip Your Heart Out
Artist: Kansasburns
Label: Self-released
Release date: 14 Feb

Released on Valentine's Day, Rip Your Heart Out is a suitably festive offering from Newcastle four-piece Kansasburns. The post-rock/hardcore sound the band wish to emulate is apparent from the outset: ambient guitar work, fade-ins/outs, and echoed multi-vocal sections are all staples, channelling the likes of Thrice. The geographic reference in the band name is not the only homage to the US - the lead vocalist’s accent, evident from the off, is reminiscent of Billy Talent; this becomes increasingly obvious on second track Airstrike Philosophy, which at times ventures towards being an eyebrow-raising lament. The title track, however, is the highlight: entirely instrumental with a slow-build, Explosions In The Sky-esque intro, finishing in one almighty hardcore breakdown shredfest. A coherent and undoubtedly heartfelt EP, albeit wearing hearts and influences somewhat on the sleeve. [Lauren Mayberry]
