False Advertising – Brainless EP

Album Review by Katie Hawthorne | 27 Apr 2016
Album title: Brainless
Artist: False Advertising
Label: Self-released
Release date: April 22

Just a heads-up; you can disregard the Mancunian band's moniker and the EP's title. Over five tracks on Brainless, their follow-up to last year's stupidly good debut record, False Advertising hand you a proper, heavyweight rock record put together with integrity, intelligence and heart - no strings or T&Cs attatched. DIY to the bone, the trio combine the clout of Kagoule with Speedy Ortiz's ability to nail a melody through a hazy smoke-screen of fuzz.

The record hinges on the dual vocals of Jen Hingley and Chris Warr, united in their ability to drip with a scathing, commanding, zero-fucks-given. The record's single Alopecia is an out-the-gates fighter, backed up by Josh Sellar's punchy, filling bass lines and You're Too Slow is a gratifyingly uncomplicated, unvarnished grunge pop anthem. Brainless is a celebration of how good – and powerful – it feels to be noisy, in the spirit of a free-wheeler down a steep hill with the sun in your eyes. Breathless, grubby, reckless fun.
