The Hedrons - One More Won't Kill Us

Considerable charm and panache, yet lacking originality and breadth

Album title: One More Won't Kill Us
Artist: The Hedrons

The Hedrons have been touted as Glasgow's next big thing, attracting praise from publications as diverse as The Sunday Times and Kerrang! Their debut album - clocking in at under forty minutes and packed with short, punchy rock-outs - has considerable charm and panache, yet it lacks originality and breadth, opting for a series of frantic assaults rather than developing any subtle moods.

By the sixth track - the admittedly bracing 'Stop, Look and Listen' - the album has all but degenerated into identikit rockers, hampered by vocalist Tippi's limited range and Soup's predictable drumming. Rosie's guitar switches from uptight menace to howling horror fluidly - the melodies on 'Heatseeker' and 'One More Won't Kill Me' are oblique and catchy - but even her virtuoso forays into metal soloing can't hide The Hedrons' lack of ideas. Nevertheless, this is a solid debut album, and winningly aggressive in parts, although it owes far too much to the Ramones. [Gareth K Vile]
