Album title: Carbohydrates Hydrocarbons
Artist: Michael Yonkers with the Blind Shake
Label: Farm Girl
Release date: 21 Jul

Now in his fifth decade of performing, Michael Yonkers and his trademark sawn-off telecaster team up with fellow Minneapolis trio The Blind Shake to subvert the digital revolution with 14 doses of scuzzy, Stooges-influenced, guitar muck. Fascinating personal story aside (including a broken back), Yonkers has been a cult icon since the 60s and is namechecked by contemporaries of all eras, from Iggy Pop to Hot Snakes.
This record is a booming, clattering melee of garage noise, swirling round a hub of simple, effective songwriting. The eponymous opener is a concise example of the collected abilities on display, providing a hooky chorus without sacrificing any of the grime. Having served as an inspiration for many in the punk movement, Yonkers demonstrates just such unfussy sensibilities and thanks to The Blind Shake's injection of gritty youth, together they turn out a well-realised slice of murky rock and roll.
