Hans-Joachim Roedelius and Tim Story - Inlandish

Unlikely to break down any wider musical barriers.

Roedelius, better known as part of Krautrock mainstays Cluster, is at pains to avoid this album being labelled 'ambient'. However, devoid of any beats and largely comprised of soothing piano over washing electronica or woodwind, it's easy to see why such a comparison might be made. Esoteric is the key word here. Those well versed in the work of co-collaborator Tim Story will definitely appreciate the subtle expertise on display, particularly the creeping malevolence of certain passages in As it Were and Downrivers. Fans of Labradford might also enjoy the lulling cello of The Orchardist, yet this album lacks the poignancy and focus required to capture the collective imagination and is unlikely to break down any wider musical barriers. Inlandish is a tremendously delicate and elegant recording but, for the average punter, the image of immersion tanks, music therapy and scented candles floating idly in a darkened bathhouse is surely inescapable.
