Gol – Roots
World jazz with electronica infusions would be the best way to describe Gol, an Edinburgh based band who can be caught at this year's Jazz and Blues festival. Sultry vocalist Roxana Pope is one of their unique selling points, along with the drum n bass-sytle percussion samples and the lyrics based on Farsi verse by poet Moussa Kamali.
This EP is rounded out by keys, bass and tenor and soprano sax and has an after-hours ambience made more interesting by the Middle Eastern-derived scales and textures. Pope's vocals float seductively and the lyrics evoke transition, rootlessness and longing without descending into mournfulness. A classy but short set– would be intriguing to see how they do in a live setting. [David McNally]
