Black Kids - Partie Traumatic

Equally workable as party album and hangover soundtrack

Album Review by Jason Morton | 30 Jun 2008
Album title: Partie Traumatic
Artist: Black Kids
Label: Almost Gold
Release date: 7 Jul

With the hype surrounding Black Kids’ acclaimed four-track demo, Wizard of Ahhhs, the expectations surrounding the Kids’ debut full-length Partie Traumatic have been set relatively high. Indeed, one can’t help but make comparisons to Wizard, as the tracks from that release have been re-recorded and put to work on this LP. And while these songs stand out among the best on show here, Black Kids haven’t completed the rest of the record with mere filler, as the title track and Look at Me (When I Rock Witchoo) appear hellbent on achieving dancefloor anthem status. Overall, Partie Traumatic is an energetic and ambitious set of dance-pop ditties, equally workable as party album and hangover soundtrack. Bernard Butler's clear production helps bring focus to added synth arrangements, not to mention the cheery (sometimes sickly so) female backing vocals and the playful lyrics of frontman Reggie Youngblood. Those looking for an album to match the sunny days of summer need look no further than Partie, and while Black Kids might not Teach Your Boyfriend How to Dance with You, they might at least guide the poor lad to the floor.
