Biffy Clyro - Singles 2001-2005

An easy access course into the history of Biffy Clyro for perhaps a less experienced clientele

Album Review by Emma Smith | 01 Jul 2008
Album title: Singles 2001-2005
Artist: Biffy Clyro
Label: Beggars Banquet
Release date: 7 Jul

As you might imagine, this 'best of' collection chronologically charts the west coast trio’s rise from the naive and unsure 27 to the more assuredly bombastic singles from Infinity Land. Frontman Simon Neil’s lyrical ability to warm the heart is showcased alongside the technical ability of each individual member of the trio, with melodies and tempos in frenzied competition to create what quickly became an accomplished and unique sound. With the commercial success of latest album Puzzle, the Biffy recruited a copious number of new fans, many clueless to the prolific back catalogue that their new favourites had already achieved and this record is quite obviously for them. Although this is clearly an easy access course into the history of the band for perhaps a less experienced clientele, the flip side is that it may also serve as a reminder to older fans of how interesting Biffy Clyro once were, rubbing salt into the wounds of those who disagree with the Foo Fighter aping that has dominated their latest output.
