Thurston Moore has released a new stand-alone single, entitled Cease Fire, via Caroline International. Recorded in London in 2015 with the Thurston Moore Band (My Bloody Valentine bassist Debbie Googe, guitarist James Sedwards and guest drummer Jem Doulton), the track marks the experimental rock veteran's first foray into song-based material since 2014 album The Best Day

Described as an "anti-gun song", Cease Fire serves as Moore's response to a worldwide climate of violence, taking in war, genocide and smaller (yet no less tragic) acts of bloodshed. Musically, it should feel familiar to fans who've kept a close eye on his work since the latter days of Sonic Youth. Of Cease Fire, Moore comments: “Guns are designed to kill and we, as non-violent human beings, are against the killing of any person or animal. The song is also about the power of love, in all its freedom of choice. A power that no gun can extinguish as love will rule always. Melt down your guns and kiss your neighbour.”

The Thurston Moore Band (with usual drummer Steve Shelley of Sonic Youth back in the fold) will also tour the UK in June, including dates in Manchester and Glasgow – listen to Cease Fire here and read the full tour dates below.

Moore is currently undertaking a residency in Salford's Islington Mill, culminating in a poetry reading on Wednesday 1 March (coinciding with the single's release) and a live performance of new material on Friday 3 March.
