Glasgow’s The Ninth Wave have covered The Pogues’ Love You Till the End and filmed a dreamy, festive video – set around Glasgow city centre – to accompany it

Just ahead of Christmas, Glasgow four-piece The Ninth Wave  have released a festive gift in the form of a cover of a track by The Pogues – but not the one you might expect. Fairytale of New York may be ubiquitous in pubs, shops and on the radio this time of year but, for their final release of 2018, The Ninth Wave have opted to cover Love You Till the End, a deep cut from the Irish band’s seventh album Pogue Mahone.

The song is accompanied by a dreamy video that sees the band's frontman Haydn Park-Patterson and bassist-vocalist Millie Kidd dressed as angels on a wild night in Glasgow's city centre. The euphoric electronic sound the band embrace on the track, meanwhile, is a departure from their trademark brand of dark, introspective post-punk.

“We decided to make this cover the final thing we put out this year because The Pogues aren’t exactly like our band but still capture emotion in the same way,” said the band in a statement. “We did the whole thing in a couple of days – we recorded it all one night in our studio and then it was mixed by Dan [Austin] who we’ve worked with since our first releases.”

Love You Till the End tops off a lively year for The Ninth Wave, with recent singles Sometimes the Silence is Sweeter and A Wave Goodbye to the People Who Said I’d Win getting plenty of airplay nationwide. The band have also had a busy touring schedule, which includes an upcoming hometown show at Saint Luke’s on 21 December (tickets here).
