Kaputt – Highlight (Track Premiere)
Listen to the new single, Highlight, from Glasgow five-piece Kaputt
Glasgow-based five-piece Kaputt haven’t been too long on the scene, but already they’re making serious waves sharing stages with the likes of DUDS, Damo Suzuki and Omni, who they supported on both the Glasgow and Edinburgh legs of their tour back in August.
Following on from the release of their Demo 2017 EP, their latest single Highlight follows on from this excellently with more of the same: perfectly placed scattering sax, scuzzy vocals and tricky syncopated rhythms all tied up in a fascinating bundle. The thing that’s so magical about Highlight is the call-and-response ‘Highlight’ vocals of the chorus, which are effortlessly passed between Cal Donnelly and Simone Wilson, who also play together in the magnificent Breakfast Muff.
Highlight is jagged and boisterous, with just the right amount of cowbell and everything in-between. Needless to say, we absolutely love it and are thrilled to be premiering it in the below SoundCloud player (click here if it’s not displaying properly).
"Highlight comes from the phrase ‘highlight of my career’, which is something my Grandad always used to say in reference to his favourite moments of his life," Donnelly tells us. "I was looking for a way to properly eulogise him, after he passed away, and had some words already about his life but felt it wasn't tied together properly.
"When writing this song I remembered that phrase and we kept repeating it while practising. Suddenly the other words fit around it and it flowed in a way which made sense within the narrative and the context of the song (at least in my head). I guess the words formed round the music and the music formed round the words."
Highlight is released on a limited cassette run, 12 Nov via Prawnshelle Records/Fuzzkill Records and available to buy here; Kaputt play Picture House Social, Sheffield, 10 Nov; Marc Riley Show, BBC 6 Music, 14 Nov; Wharf Chambers, Leeds, 23 Nov; DIY Space for London, London, 25 Nov; Stag and Hounds, Bristol, 26 Nov; JT Soar, Nottingham, 27 Nov; Leith Depot, Edinburgh, 28 Nov
