It’s been a long time – five and a half months to be precise – since we’ve been able to bring you an exclusive first listen of a track here at The Skinny, so it gives us great pleasure to introduce you to Kinbote, the latest signing from the Lost Map label.

Originally from East Lothian, but now based in Glasgow, Kinbote is the moniker of electronic glitch-pop producer Matt Gibb. Set to release his debut album Shifting Distance via Lost Map Records on 4 December, we are delighted to share with you its lead single Hiemalis. It's a gloriously jittery two-and-a-half minutes of bedrooom pop in which Gibb has masterfully turned the sound of walking over a forest floor into a shuffling bassline, stitching it into a dreamlike tapestry with other samples and found sounds.

Gibb says this song is about “gaining perspectives on events that seemed inconvenient or frustrating at the time, but I can now accept as valuable.”

Of the single’s accompanying music video, shot by Gibb, which you can watch in the above YouTube player (click here if it's not displaying properly), he tells us: “The video has the structure of a dream; I tried to represent the feeling of moving but not feeling like you're going anywhere with the quick-cut repetitions. It moves through locations that are very different, but the situation is always the same – the same two people, the same confusion. There is a journey, but it loops back on itself and melts together without any real purpose.”

If you like what you hear then be sure to catch Kinbote playing as part of Almost Ghosts' digital showcase this coming Saturday 19 September, and if you're a member of Lost Map’s PostMap Club keep your eyes and ears peeled for the postie coming as Hiemalis is one of this month's featured singles.

Hiemalis is released on 16 Sep; Shifting Distance is released on 4 Dec via Lost Map Records; Kinbote performs as part of Almost Ghosts' digital showcase, 19 Sep, from 7pm – more info here
