Eight months since the release of their last album What We Might Know, Broken Records frontman Jamie Sutherland released the first single, When We’re Alone, on 30 November from his upcoming debut solo record Bruise, due in 2019.

Not even a week on from its release and The Skinny are delighted to be premiering the video, shot by Edinburgh-based filmmaker Mario Cruzado, for his next single, Falling Down, which you can watch in the above YouTube player (click here if it’s not displaying correctly). In the song, Sutherland’s vocals are sincere, with an infectious vulnerability, sounding like they’ve been pushed to the absolute edge, and Cruzado’s artfully shot, black and white, stream of consciousness-style video is the perfect companion.

"Falling Down is a drinking song, a feeling hopeless song, and kind of a hopelessly romantic song," Sutherland tells us. "The power that someone else has to save you from yourself and the bad habits you can get stuck in. I never wanted to make a classic 'solo' record before, in fact the idea was pretty horrible to me, but something about finishing the last Broken Records album and continuing the themes of that record about growing a little older, having my little boy and then going back to things I remember listening to when I was growing up, to draw some parallel, was something that felt really essential to me.

"Neil Pennycook (Meursault, producer of the record) and I talked a lot about not making a middle-aged record (too early for that!), but to make a record that reflected a change in circumstances, different worries, different joys, life etc. This is kind of a homage to Blonde on Blonde via Bright Eyes and Calexico and I love it. Love, redemption and an organ solo by the inimitable Reuben Taylor! All the good stuff."

Of the video, Cruzado says: "I wanted to work with the idea of how I recollect things (especially after hitting the pub). I usually forget details and specifics but I remember the feelings so thought that seeing the images merging into a sort of single narrative would work well. We did it all in slow motion and matched the shots in the edit which gave the video this floating woozy look."
