The Young Knives @ QMU

During She's Attracted To's crazed refrain of 'You were screaming at your mum and I was punching your dad', it becomes clear that The Young Knives are what guitar music should be about: fun, shouting and rocking, with an irresistible wit. The band might look like the product of a school boy and a farmer's son deciding to make beautiful music together, but their spiky guitar pop is honed to perfection, with In The Pink's bluesy swamp and the surreal Loughborough Suicide transforming from album tracks into powerhouse anthems onstage. The band's seemingly boundless energy is matched only by the crowd's feverish dancing, and the room pretty much loses its dignity as crunching chords herald the start of Weekends And Bleak Days. There is nothing here that's revolutionary, but that's not what The Young Knives are about. They're an unpretentious, fun band, and that's all we need them to be. More like this, please.
