The Sugars @ Cabaret Voltaire

We're going to need aural toothpaste to protect ourselves from this cavity-creating scuzz-fuzz blues

We all know too much sugar rots our teeth but no one's ever mentioned the effect it has on our ears. If the devout fifties sound of The Sugars is anything to go by we're going to need aural toothpaste to protect ourselves from this cavity-creating scuzz-fuzz blues. Never as sickly sweet as their name suggests, the band visually imitates an era of slicked back quiffs and jitterbug dresses. Sonically, they're an intriguing concoction of ragged rockabilly and delectable doo-wop that's as retro as the deco microphones. Lacking any true absorption, tonight's performance struggles to match the standard set by the band's dazzling Butlins-esque appearance, but with tracks as smoulderingly shuffling as Monster it's only a matter of time before they fulfil their promise. For now The Sugars are a rather artificial sweetener but there's enough here to suggest they'll become the perfect compliment to everyone's cup of tea. [Billy Hamilton]
