The Heebie-Jeebies and Kessler @ Nice N' Sleazies

not the perfect soundtrack to a romantic evening out, but confident, epic sets

The Heebie-Jeebies and Kessler share the distinctive flat-footed snare and rattling guitar of eighties New Wave: neither are the perfect soundtrack to a romantic evening, but both bands display an increasing confidence, building their sets to epic climaxes and staking out their own ground. The Heebie-Jeebies are more fun, with a synthesizer taken from the soundtrack to a cheerful science programme for schools. Kessler play a more relaxed set which invites the audience to 'Clap Your Hands', keeping it tight and pacy, and rising towards an aching finale.

If either band displays a weakness, it is in the monotone of their songs - having found their respective moods, they rarely stray far from the formula: Kessler are windswept outsiders, The Heebie-Jeebies are bouncier. Their musicianship and mastery of song structure is unquestionable and as their experience grows, they could bring a broader variety of moods into play and become devastating. [Gareth K Vile]
