The Fire Engines Edinburgh Liquid Room, April 28

the Fire Engines have always been experts in the art of leaving us wanting more

The perfect opener for the awe-inspiring Sun Ra Arkestra, the Fire Engines live up to their legend by hammering out six or so of their fiercely intertwining angular guitar classics which still beat most contemporary attempts at post-punk hands down. What sounds almost improvised on record is clearly not, as the versions here are almost identical replicas of their recorded counterparts and sound just as urgent; not bad considering it's been 25 years since they first recorded them. Front man Davey Henderson still looks the part and he's in fantastic voice - he has as much punk attitude as the young John Lydon but without the unpleasant aftertaste. It's all over too soon of course, but then the Fire Engines have always been experts in the art of leaving us wanting more. [Milo McLaughin]
