Switches are checking out their options, searching for perfect pop

Article by Margaret Kirk | 10 Jun 2007
Switches are constantly threatening to turn into Status Quo. The loose and raw guitar riffs that introduce the songs, the blues-driven energy and generous use of overdrive combine in a squall of noise. Their songs - sometimes audible through the power-playing as rather sweet and melodic - pay homage to the greats of pop-rock,the stomping thump of glam, the delicacy of Bolan and the craftiness of Bowie.

On record, Switches switch between influences, as if searching for the perfect format. Live, they are more visceral, but loose lightness of touch beneath the marauding distortion. The set begins with an attention grabbing Drama Queen, just on the right side of hysterical, but the lack of variation in pacing and intensity begins to tell, making the show drag. Caught somewhere between the desire to be a sly treat and a bombastic assault, Switches are checking out their options, searching for the perfect pop. [Margaret Kirk]
