Pravda @ Oran Mor

a slightly hackneyed combination of glamour and aggression

As part of Café Oh La La, Oran Mor's monthly French night, Pravda are raw and shocking: regarded as one of Paris' most promising bands, they plug into a harsh electro-punk sound. Recalling a robotic Blondie or a sensuous Kraftwerk, they rely on a slightly hackneyed combination of glamour and aggression: tracks like 'Je Suis French' seem aimed at an English speaking audience, and the angry guitars are more New Wave than Euro-pop.

While they are not as frightening or original as they might imagine, Pravda are competent rockers and use electronic noise as an effective backdrop to their juddering bass and guitar assault. Set between a disco that featured French hip-hop and rock'n'roll, they come across as a refreshing challenge. [Gareth K Vile]
