Phoenix / The Like @ King Tut's

Trademark sugary melodies and sunshine-pop aura are near ever-present

Sophia Coppola's favourite Frenchmen hit King Tuts on the Scottish date of their UK tour to promote third album, 'It's Never Been Like That', but not before ridiculously young looking female trio The Like perform warm-up duties, sounding like a genteel My Bloody Valentine. Phoenix open with Napolean Says; nagging guitar riff meeting urgent drums, then go on to air further new tracks. As with most of their output, the trademark sugary melodies and sunshine-pop aura are near ever-present, inducing the familiar fuzzy warm feeling long associated with the Phoenix sound. Despite the bulk of their set being given over to newer material, they dip generously into their back catalogue, offering a brilliantly drawn-out version of Funky Square Dance. Inevitably, the biggest applause greeted their encore as they closed with So Young, probably as near possible to the definitive feel good track of the noughties. [Colin Chapman]
