Noisettes @ King Tut's

already at the top of their game

Fresh off the back of a three month stint supporting Muse on their European tour, the Noisettes embark on their own UK excursion to promote new album, What's the time Mr Wolf? One might expect that with such a packed schedule, the band's trademark energy-soaked live performance may be found wanting. This is not the case. Shingai (vocals/bass) and her two-man gang scream, stomp and high kick their way thorough an hour-long orgy of good old fashioned rock, reeling off a packed set that includes much of the new album, plus a few new gems.

Stripped down to a simple three-piece arrangement, the Noisettes deliver a raw, edgy and hard-hitting live act that makes for great viewing. The band members seem to have it all. Jamie Morrison on drums resembles Animal from the Muppets – bearded, big hair, and arms flaying – and his powerful rhythms drive the band forward. Dan Smith is the quintessential introverted guitarist and provides the perfect on-stage counterbalance to Morrison's rhythmical mania. The proverbial cherry, however, is Shingai Shoniwa, who combines cabaret theatricality with extraordinary vocal ability to produce a truly mesmerising performance.

It has been suggested by some that 2007 could be the year for the Noisettes to make a big splash. Whether or not this kind of music will be commercially successful remains to be seen. As a live act however, they are already at the top of their game. [Joe Lewis]
