Nick Oliveri and his Mondo Generator @ The Barfly, June 13

what heroes did next'

Heroes set high expectations and 'what heroes did next' can pave the way for serious disappointment, I'm talking Velvet Revolver people… Nick Oliveri and his Mondo Generator brought just such baggage to the Glasgow Barfly and yet thankfully managed to set this aside during a confident and - in a total contrast to The Dwarves incarnation - even mature set. With Winnebago Deal fleshing out his band, Oliveri has managed to do what we wish so many talented bass players would by taking centre stage in a way that explains just what they contributed to their former band. Call it the Kim Deal principle. Thumping through the 'tunes you would know' from Mondo's somewhat hit and miss back catalogue and pleasing fans with Oliveri-fronted Queens numbers, this band of refugees from other outfits carried off a gig to confound critics by being not only competent but fucking good fun.
