Klaxons @ King Tut's, 13 Jul

Yes, there are glowsticks (well, two) and crowd-surfing is permitted (for a while at least) but primarily the Klaxons (opening with the hypnotically manic Flashover from forthcoming LP Surfing The Void) are keen to show they haven’t lost their exuberant energy over the past three years.

They’re encouraged to note that their audience hasn’t either, with Jamie Reynolds seeming genuinely taken aback by the enthusiasm washing over the intimate venue. The set is divided evenly between the old and new, with the infectious singalong(ish) track Venusha being generously received.

However, tracks from Myths of the Near Future have been given an infusion of the heavy with the addition of two members, Steffan Halperin on drums and Anthony Rossomando (Dirty Pretty Things) on guitar. This works most effectively on closers Atlantis To Interzone and that reworking of acid rave favourite It’s Not Over Yet, both given a welcome added bite. [Frank Bantam]
