Kings of Leon @ SECC

It's suddenly difficult to imagine them returning to anything smaller than this

Given that Because of the Times is the aural equivalent of Kings of Leon in widescreen and that the band's popularity is seemingly ever increasing, it's logical that the brothers (and cousin) from Tennessee would embark on a UK arena tour this time around. The gripes that most gig-goers have about the SECC are well documented, but tonight the Kings successfully transcend its atmospheric limitations to deliver a blinding set. While it is the hit singles that predictably whip the crowd into a frenzy, expansive album tracks such as Arizona and Knocked Up also receive a rapturous reception and highlight just how much these early 20-somethings have progressed musically since Youth and Young Manhood. An elaborate backdrop of screens which merge striking imagery and lighting with stylishly shot footage of both the band and the crowd heighten the sense of occasion, and we are left on a high with the storming Charmer. Now it's suddenly difficult to imagine Kings of Leon returning to anything smaller than this. [Graeme Blaikie]
