Gruff Rhys @ Liquid Room

his singular vision remains untainted by the aging process

As music scene veterans from Noel Gallagher to the Manic Street Preachers have proven, it can be easy to rest on your laurels once the questing days of youth are gone. Thankfully, the dangers of middle-aged complacency don't seem to have registered on the reliably skewed radar of Super Furry Animals frontman Gruff Rhys. Rhys is currently making the most of a hiatus between SFA commitments and released his debut solo album, Candylion – a lovably eccentric collection of childlike pop songs and folky experiments – earlier this year. And, as this tour de force Triptych curtain-closer proves, his singular vision remains untainted by the aging process. The evening starts with Rhys and a female accomplice, Lisa Jen, enacting an inflight safety demonstration - setting a tone of waywardness that is maintained throughout the set. Moments of sheer beauty sit comfortably in harness with esoteric experiments, proving that, in his own words, the man (still) don't give a fuck. Thank God. [Duncan Forgan]
