Final Fantasy @ ABC2

when you leave people gasping, that's little to complain about

Halfway through Final Fantasy's set at ABC2, almost everyone had forgotten the virtuosic technique we were witnessing. Owen Pallett stood slim and studious, violin in the crook of his neck, foot on the looper pedal, and wove songs. And every now and then, someone in the crowd would remember that all this sampling was being done live, that it was Pallett who had engineered every lilt of melody or counterpuntal swerve – and you'd hear a gasp. Or, it being Glasgow, a yell: "Fuck!" With his sure fiddle, sweet-and-wry voice, and handmade visuals by overhead projector, little differed from Pallett's appearance at Nice 'n Sleazy's earlier this year – but when you leave people gasping (or even swearing), that's little to complain about.
