Ed Harcourt @ The Classic Grand

It's the last night of the tour and I've decided to be obnoxious

It's the last night of the tour and I've decided to be obnoxious, murmurs Ed Harcourt, and he's not kidding: when he's not arguing with the lighting tech, he's shooting down hecklers in spectacular fashion and generally isn't too pleased to be here. But grumpiness aside, Ed delivers a passionate performance; performing solo, he relies heavily on looping, allowing him to move between piano, guitar and percussion, and he even ends a rocked-up I've Become Misguided by battering what looks like two tiny woks with a drumstick.

The setlist is surprising, particularly the shimmering Fireflies Take Flight, and he even asks for requests, resulting in him splitting the crowd to sing backing on Loneliness and exclaiming "this is gonna be great, like some sort of Christian workshop!" By the time he finishes with Shanghai, he's cheered up considerably, but while tonight's gig was impressive, it feels like the crowd enjoyed themselves a hell of a lot more than he did.
