Cortez @ Barfly

fun and a nostalgic flick through your dad's record collection

Although many of Cortez's tunes certainly inspire a smile, one can't ignore the feeling that you've heard this before. The Glasgow four-piece flash a Thin Lizzy lick here, an Aerosmith rhythm there, and tie it together under titles like 'New York Nights'. Parts of their set seem derivative - a common and forgivable sin - and dated, which is unfortunately a little harder to excuse. Guitarist Jimi Van is an obvious talent, and his riffs would surely get AC/DC's approval. However, as much as Eddie Van Halen's technique shaped a generation of guitarists, it hasn't worn well. There are examples of high-quality song craft, particularly slow-burning 'Ginny'. Singer Mick O'Neill has an onstage presence similar to the Black Crowes' Chris Robinson, and he belts out some breathtaking Plant-esque high notes. If you're looking for fun and maybe a nostalgic flick through your dad's record collection, then Cortez might just be for you. [Paul Crawford]
