Chromeo @ Sub Club

The crowd dances erratically; facial expressions distort, lips purse, shoulders bounce.

Glaswegians are known for active audience participation. As Chromeo, the electro-funk, hip-hop duo, plays Fancy Footwork, personal inhibitions are quashed. The crowd dances erratically; facial expressions distort, lips purse, shoulders bounce. Next comes the chanting and fist pumping, fraught with intense respect and drunken camaraderie. Dave 1 - guitarist, Columbia PhD student, and entertainer extraordinaire - is visibly taken aback, at moments giggling into the mic, unable to speak. P-Thug - synth-maestro, Renaissance man and badass motherfucker - even cracks a smile. Chromeo's live set is saturated with reverb, guitar solos, keyboard and P-Thug's talk box. Their sound is reminiscent of early 80s funk, with a little Daft Punk, Harold Faltermeyer and Prince sprinkled throughout. Rage, Momma's Boy and Needy Girl are crowd favourites, creating a dynamic between the Montreal/New York duo and the Glasgow audience of pure, electric energy. Further proof that this city can turn good live music into fully realized magic. [Beth Malone]
