Carnival time halts for no man

Article by Jaco Justice | 20 Aug 2008

With their own MTV show in their native Brazil, an album deal with Domino Records plus an appearance due the following night at the suffocating ‘stylismo’ that is the Arches' Death Disco there's much reason to be present for the drippingly hot Bonde do Role’s debut in Aberdeen tonight.

Some in attendance were ignorant to BDR live being just four MCs - utilising only decks for backing - but when the performers are refined in the art of motivating a bustling dance floor into a hyperactive 45 minute gym class we adapt quickly. In each track, or 240 second name-calling bursts, we are croak-machined, belly flashed, glitter-sprinkled and robot rocked by a carnival rapping baille funk quartet while pre-edited ‘nerd’ beats are ripped from British acid house, French techno and American metal.

In between spouts of the above, founding member Pedro pierces us with his deep, Latin gaze while spitting helpful English lyrical explanations of coconut squeezing, chicken neck crunching and the mundane existence of 9-5 office jobs back in his Portuguese-tongued Brazil. Gorky’s cookie monster drones help to get the conga lines working through the sweaty crowd which, ultimately, leave disappointingly early because of a shortened venue license – don’t they know that Carnival time halts for no man?
