Bat For Lashes / Euro Childs @ Cabaret Voltaire

like Pocahontas and her handmaids transposed to the modern day

Fusing the downright strange and the unearthly, the combined talents of Euro Childs and Bat For Lashes resulted in a night of the inimitable. Former Gorky's Zygotic Mynci frontman Childs is first up, melding Welsh folk with pure pop sounds to reveal something far removed from the mainstream.
Conquering the audience with eccentric confections such as the clamorous Donkey Island and the mellow valediction of First Time I Saw You, Childs' infinite energy produces a raucous euphoria. Bat For Lashes mainstay Natasha Khan and her all-female four-piece follow entering the stage like Pocahontas and her handmaids transposed to the modern day. Resplendent in a bejewelled headdress, Khan belts out powerful folk ballads to the beat of native drums and tinkling cymbals. Her ethereal voice enchants during intense numbers Sarah and Pricilla. And while the influence of Bjork and Kate Bush might just be a little bit too discernible, Khan's magnetic stage presence and her weird and wonderful tunes ensure that this evening of eccentricity ends on a high.
