Air (Live) @ ABC 1, Glasgow - March 14th

The pair's subtly, nuanced sound, at times a mere backdrop to proceedings

Fresh from the release of fourth album, 'Pocket Symphony', the Gallic duo open their tour with a Glasgow sell-out.

A decade has passed since their Moon Safari debut; the ubiquitous late nineties soundtrack to the day after the night before. Its blissful pop has come to define the pair, a fact again apparent tonight.

Nicolas Godin's guitar is partnered with the keys and synths of Jen-Benoit Dunckel, both adding vocals atop a varied musical backing, which adds weight and depth at several intervals.

On occasion the pair's subtly nuanced sound live seems a mere backdrop to the evenings' proceedings, the crowd's chatter easily heard over it. Coupled with a perhaps unsurprisingly inanimate performance and sparse stage lighting; at times there was little to truly engage with.

The beauty of their emotive, soundtrack-style arrangements cannot be doubted but, bar their earlier career efforts, they don't quite translate to gig format.
